Russian join with Ribbon–Knots Be gone

March 24, 2014 by crone1

In 2004 the Crones attended Estes Park Wool Festival.  Wow, almost 10 years ago, how time flies.

One Crone took a color/weaving class and the other took a triangle loom weaving class. The best tip that came from that class was a suggestion to join the Yahoo Triangle weaving group.  You have to be approved to join and it IS an On Topic Only group.

After being approved to join,  this Crone went and read most of the past posts and viewed many of the great pictures members had posted.  Around a year later, one of the members, Pat Herman, mentioned the term “Russian join” in a post, and I was immediately intrigued as I hate to bury ends and wanted the option of not having to do fringe.

You use the Russian join to add/change yarn as you weave. I also use it in knitting, crocheting, and 4 harness weaving. It makes an almost invisible join. There are no “ends” to bury. If you are changing colors I try to do it on the edge of the woven item, if you are adding a new ball of yarn in the same color you can do it anywhere. At some future date I will post with pictures how it looks in knitting, crochet, and 4 harness weaving. For this post  I want to show you that it can be done also with ribbon. I am using Lions Brand Incredible Ribbon.

You can click on any picture to enlarge it.

Preparing the first loop

First you take a large tapestry needle and interweave it thru the ribbon

2 kinds of needles

This is a picture of two of the needles I have used for ribbon

Placing the second end

I like to place the 2nd yarn before I make the loop

Looping the first tail. Notice that it is not cut on an angle. My bad.

Inserting the ribbon to make the first loop

How it looks with the first loop done

How it looks with the first loop done and the second tail is ready to be inserted onto itself

Notice the second end is cut on angle. Better to bury.

Notice that the two tails should be cut on an angle. The second loop is being made by weaving the needle into the ribbon, and you insert the cut loop.

The completed join.

The completed join. Be sure to tug “gently” at each end to make sure it will not come undone

The join is woven as usual.
